Precision sand and gravity die castings for the defence sector

Haworth Castings ramps up casting production for a growing Defence sector

Current geopolitical conditions have increased pressure on worldwide defence casting manufacturers to increase the supply of components used in military applications.

With many years of experience in this field, Haworth Castings has responded quickly to this increased demand, extending its sand and gravity die casting capacity to supply key manufacturers in the Defence sector with precision-engineered military cast components that meet the stringent requirements of the sector.

Supporting an expanding global defence market

The global market for defence casting solutions is expanding rapidly. At an extraordinary summit in Brussels in March 2022, NATO members agreed to “accelerate our efforts to fulfil our commitment to the Defence Investment Pledge in its entirety” – a pledge by NATO members to spend at least 2% of their country’s GDP on defence.

Haworth Castings supplies castings for the defence sector to a range of UK armoured vehicle programs and has seen demand from existing customers for components for military applications such as land-based vehicles increase in volume and urgency, alongside a growth in enquiries for new cast applications from both current and new customers.

Increasing capacity for Defence applications

Haworth Castings has responded to this growth in demand by increasing its capacity to supply this crucial sector, says Managing Director Lachlan Buirds.

“Military equipment operates in some of the harshest environments on the planet, so quality, integrity and reliability are critically important. As a defence casting manufacturer, Haworth Castings’ components meet the highest engineering standards, and we are pleased to be able to deliver more castings, more quickly, to support this sector.”

The advantages of castings for military applications

A wide variety of components for military applications are well suited to sand casting and gravity-die casting. For example, Haworth Castings supplies structural components and parts for transmission and cooling systems for land-based defence vehicles.

The advantages of sand and gravity-die casting for military applications include:

  • Excellent surface finish
  • High dimensional accuracy
  • Reliable process controls and repeatability
  • Ability to cast intricate parts
  • Long life tooling
  • Elimination of the requirement for secondary machining

Agile supply solutions

In addition to having years of experience in manufacturing military cast components for the Defence industry, Haworth Castings continues to drive improvements to benefit customers. The company is currently working closely with Make UK to develop a better understanding of its offering to the Defence sector, and working on agile supply solutions that will help meet customer requirements at pace.

Turnkey solutions for performance-critical environments

Customers in the Defence field are increasingly demanding a one-stop-shop for their military cast components. Haworth Castings has the expertise to manage the entire production process, from assisting with design for manufacture (DfM) through prototyping to manufacturing, finishing and NDT.

Drawing upon the wider capabilities of Expromet Technologies Group, Haworth Castings is also able to offer comprehensive sand and gravity-die casting, machining and fabrication solutions through a single source – reducing the administration and logistics demands on the customer.
